Snapshots

These photos are memories from the field. I have collected them through the many trips I've taken in the South over the past few years. They have no other significance but that of having attracted my attention for some reason or another.

Memphis, TN, 2017

In November 2017, I took a brief trip from Atlanta to Memphis via Tupelo, MS and Oxford, MS. Even though the trip was short in time, I crossed in the span of two days four state lines, saw the Mississippi River up close for the first time, got bit by red ants in front of Elvis' birthplace and stole a fallen magnolia pod from the ground of Faulkner's garden.

Decatur, GA, 2014

These photos were taken in the vicinity of Emory University. They include shots from the main green and the library, as well as shots from the surrounding suburbs. I was a visiting scholar at the time and, without a car or a driving licence, my time was spent exploring the outskirts of Decatur by foot. It lead me through rivers, railroads and forest, minutes away from the bustling center of the university.

Atlanta, GA, 2014

These photos were taken in Little Five Points in Atlanta, GA. I was a visiting scholar at Emory University in Spring 2014, and spent most of my free time exploring the city by foot and bus. Little Five Points was at the time a changing neighbourhood, on the verge of gentrification. It kept derelict traces of its bustling alternative life in the 90's, while already sporting signs of upcoming real estate investments. Five years later, the traces of the past captured on this film have already disappeared.

Savannah, GA, 2012

These photos were taken in the old town center of Savannah, GA, when I attended the 2012 American Literature Association (ALA) Annual Symposium. It was my first time in the South; it was muggy, foggy and misty. My camera got wet almost ruined by the heavy humidity as I wandered around the empty streets. I used expired Fuji film.
